(Day 427) Swords of Iron – “Movement on all sides”

Shabbat Shalom. Despite the intensity of the current situation, the arrival of Shabbat always brings a sense of peace and rest. Yet, this tranquility is far from the reality in Jenin, where Islamic Jihad operatives are stealing vehicles from the Palestinian Authority. Questions loom over the future of Gaza—who will take control, and what lies ahead? Meanwhile, turmoil persists in the heart of Israel, in Judea and Samaria, necessitating swift action to quell disruptive activity.

In Syria, chaos continues as rebels oust pro-government forces from Hamama, forcing mass evacuations and causing widespread upheaval across northern Syria. The rapid pace of these events raises concerns about whether Syria might become a failed state. Disturbingly, reports from Sky News Australia describe synagogues being set ablaze, with witnesses recounting petrol being poured on buildings while people fled to safety.

Amid this upheaval, Israel has warned Iran not to exploit the situation by stockpiling weapons in Syria destined for Hezbollah. Channel 12 reported that Israel will act decisively to prevent such efforts, recognizing the ceasefire as merely a tactical pause for those seeking to rearm. The presence of Al-Qaeda and other groups further complicates the already volatile situation.

Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi recently assessed the developments in Syria, emphasizing vigilance against threats to Israeli civilians. They reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to thwart any attempts to rearm and to ensure the safety of its people.

As Shabbat approaches, it is also a time to reflect on the coming of Hanukkah, a season of remembrance and light. Hanukkah reminds us of the gifts God provides during hardships and calls Israel to be a light to the nations. This year, Israel plans to celebrate with a nightly production showcasing how it continues to shine amid challenges. Friends around the world are invited to participate by sending videos of themselves and their families, declaring, “I shine my light with Israel.” These collective voices of support highlight unity during a time when Israel faces numerous adversaries.

As 1 Samuel 17:47 reminds us, “It is not by sword nor by spear that the Lord saves; the battle is the Lord’s.” This promise strengthens our faith that righteousness will prevail and that Israel’s enemies will falter.

Lastly, as the year comes to an end, we encourage charitable giving to support vital works of righteousness. The Aliyah Return Center, based in the Galilee and registered in both Israel and the United States, provides tax-deductible opportunities for those who wish to bless Israel and contribute to its future. Together, we can shine a light in these trying times and stand strong for Israel. Shalom from the Galilee!

(Day 627) Swords of Iron – “Going Ballistic on Beersheva”

Chaim starts by lamenting the destruction in Ber Sheva that was caused by a last-minute Iranian ballistic missile strike just before the cease-fire went into effect. But, he says, he’s glad to live in a country that cares about its citizens and works hard to protect them, even if sometimes the bad guys land a blow. On that note, Chaim gives some details that are known about what happened in Ber Sheva, including the facts that the missile that struck the building was one of a wave that Iran fired and many more lives could have been lost if people had not been in their bomb shelters.

(Day 625) Swords of Iron – “Kaboom!”

Chaim starts by cheering on the announcement by US President Donald Trump that the US has joined the war against Iran’s nuclear program, defending the free world against one of its most dangerous enemies by destroying the Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz nuclear facilities.

(Day 619) Swords of Iron – “Remember We Didn’t Start This”

Chaim starts by acknowledging that these are difficult times in Israel, with incoming ballistic missiles and drones, cruise missiles and other weapons. Hundreds of people have been rendered homeless and at least 25 have been killed, while many more have been wounded. Israelis have had to run to their bomb shelters on several occasions over the past five days, and sometimes we have to stay there for extended periods, but it’s very important for us to stay safe.
