Swords of Iron Day 1058 starts on white sand in the Galilee and ends with a story most of the world will never hear: Israeli doctors preparing to treat thousands of children in Gaza. Both things are true at once, and that is the point.
Swords of Iron Day 1058: The Jordan Border Cannot Be Left Unwatched
Just south of here, along Israel’s border fence with Jordan, there are serious threats: gun smuggling, drug smuggling and illegal crossings. The IDF has gone so far as to reactivate decades-old outposts along that border to deal with them.
We have already supplied a drone for that sector, and if you want to help us get more, it directly strengthens our ability to watch a long and lightly populated frontier. This is the clearest lesson of October 7th, and it cost us more than I can say to learn it: you cannot leave a border unchecked and hope for the best.
Economic Pressure on Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz
President Trump is going all in on sanctions, launching a global economic pressure campaign against Iran while trying to squeeze the regime financially rather than strike it militarily. The open question is whether financial pressure alone can force Tehran to give up its nuclear ambitions and its terror network.
At the same time, the United States says it has cleared the mines from the Strait of Hormuz, allowing commercial shipping to move more safely while pressure stays on Iranian oil exports. I would not call the military option closed; a tanker was attacked in the Strait around the same time. But the current bet is clearly on the economy.
A Real Shift in Lebanon
There is also a genuine shift in Lebanon. Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji has publicly condemned Iranian interference in Lebanon’s internal affairs as unacceptable and damaging to Lebanese sovereignty, and Beirut moved against Iran’s ambassador-designate.
That is significant, and it is new. Lebanese leaders can see what Hezbollah has brought upon their country: weapons and command centers hidden inside ordinary homes, and a foreign policy written in Tehran. Saying so out loud carries real risk there.
Swords of Iron Day 1058: The Threat Reaches the West
The threat does not stop at the Middle East. In London, four men pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to an arson attack that destroyed four ambulances belonging to the Jewish volunteer emergency service Hatzola in Golders Green, causing roughly a million pounds in damage.
Think about what was actually targeted there. Not a political office. Ambulances. Vehicles whose entire purpose is to reach a stranger having a heart attack at three in the morning. Be aware of what is happening around you, in your local meetings, your supermarkets and your synagogues.
Elections and Sharing the Burden
While I am completely apolitical myself, elections do matter, and there is a real debate here over whether military service should be shared equally, including by the ultra-Orthodox community. After three years of reserve duty, families carrying repeated deployments, and empty chairs at too many tables, this argument is not academic. Every citizen should be part of carrying the burden of defending the country.
Israel Aids Gaza Children: The NATAN Clinic in Al-Mawasi
And there is another side of Israel that the world does not always see. NATAN Worldwide Disaster Relief, an Israeli humanitarian organization, has announced a medical clinic serving up to 10,000 children at the Gaza Children’s Village in Al-Mawasi.
The clinic offers preventive screening, pediatric primary care and vaccinations, specialist consultations, rehabilitation for children with disabilities, and telemedicine, alongside education designed to be free of hatred. The Children’s Village itself was founded by the neurosurgeon and scientist Dr. David Hasan, and NATAN has also delivered other humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
Working with them is Alice Miller, whose name deserves to be remembered on its own account. In 1995 her petition produced a landmark Israeli Supreme Court ruling, Miller v. Minister of Defence, that forced the Air Force to open its pilot training course to women. She never flew as a fighter pilot herself, but every woman who has since has flown through the door she opened.
This is who we are. We will defend ourselves from Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, the Houthis and the IRGC. And we will still send doctors to vaccinate the children of the people who attacked us, because the alternative is to become what we are fighting.
People sometimes hear a story like the NATAN clinic and assume it is public relations. I understand the suspicion, but it does not survive contact with the people involved. Nobody volunteers for months of logistics inside a war zone for a press release. They do it because a child with a treatable condition should not go untreated because of who his government is.
Swords of Iron Day 1058 and the Word Over Damascus
As Shabbat ends, I look north toward Syria and the danger posed by its proximity to Turkey, Iran and the Galilee.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof… But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad. (Amos 1:3-4)
Syria is a battleground and has been for a long time. But we know God loves Israel, and that has not changed with any of the borders.
