Swords of Iron Day 1056 comes from a hard day. I am on leave from the army because a dear friend passed away, and we buried her. Standing here looking at the timeline of Israel, I am reminded how fleeting life is.
Swords of Iron Day 1056: Seasons Change, and Life Is Short
Epochs and seasons come and go. After such a hot, long summer, rain is supposedly coming soon. Funerals have a way of resetting your sense of proportion; the arguments that felt enormous last week suddenly do not.
What stays with me is gratitude for the people who do everything they can, with the time they actually have, to defend the people they love. That is not a slogan here. It is the daily arithmetic of this country.
The Lebanon Pilot Zones Have Failed
It is sad to report that the pilot zones in southern Lebanon, where we hoped the Lebanese Army would come in and remove Hezbollah’s tunnels and weapons, have failed. Israel has told the United States as much, and an Israeli security source says the Lebanese army is not destroying terror infrastructure even after receiving coordinates from the IDF.
Analysts watching the project reached the same conclusion, describing Lebanese inaction as dooming the pilot zones. Meanwhile the IDF has spent months removing tunnels, buildings, weapons infrastructure, anti-tank systems, surface-to-air missiles, explosives, rifles and mortars from southern Lebanon. Those are weapons that would eventually have been pointed at our civilians.
We would love to believe that the Lebanese Army or an international stabilization force will take care of it. But this is life and death, not diplomacy. Lebanon does not want Iranian proxies taking over its country. The real question is how much risk it is willing to take to stop them.
Swords of Iron Day 1056: Iran Is Rebuilding Its Missile Arsenal
Meanwhile, Iran is rebuilding. Israeli defense assessments suggest that if Tehran returns to producing between 100 and 300 ballistic missiles a month, it could restore its arsenal to pre-war levels by early to mid 2027.
Understand what that means in practice. These are not fireworks. Large ballistic missiles are capable of destroying entire neighborhoods, and a rebuilt arsenal is a standing threat to every city in this country. A ceasefire that lets an adversary reload is not a ceasefire; it is an intermission.
Weapons Workshops in Judea and Samaria
The same logic applies closer to home. In historically Jewish areas such as Nablus, biblical Shechem, Israeli forces have found and destroyed illegal weapons-manufacturing lathes and workshops. We have to go in and remove them before those weapons reach civilians.
And here is the part that gets lost in the coverage: missiles and terror do not check identity papers. They do not care whether the victims are Arab, Jewish, Druze, Christian or anyone else. They simply destroy. A weapons lathe in Nablus is a danger to the people of Nablus too.
Swords of Iron Day 1056: Why the Pilot Zones Mattered So Much
It is worth explaining why this particular failure stings. The pilot zones were not an Israeli demand imposed on Lebanon. They were the good-faith version of the arrangement, the one where a sovereign Lebanese state takes responsibility for its own territory and Israel steps back. Israel handed over coordinates. The mechanism existed. The question was only whether Beirut would use it.
That is why the outcome matters beyond the map. If the cooperative model cannot work in a handful of designated areas with international attention and a willing partner on the other side of the fence, it is difficult to argue it will work across the whole south on a longer timeline.
I want to be careful here, because Lebanon is not Hezbollah. Ordinary Lebanese have paid an enormous price for a militia that answers to Tehran rather than Beirut, and plenty of Lebanese say so openly. But wanting a problem solved is not the same as being willing to solve it, and the gap between those two things is where the next war gets built.
Some Genuinely Good News
To its credit, the Lebanese Army is cracking down on some smuggling. It recently arrested a Syrian national attempting to smuggle rockets into Lebanon across the Syrian border in the Bekaa. That is real, and it deserves acknowledgment.
The United States has also designated the group “Palestine Action” as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity, with the Treasury Department imposing sanctions alongside the designation. The United Kingdom proscribed the group in 2025. The West is beginning to recognize that these threats have to be confronted rather than managed.
Swords of Iron Day 1056 and the Promise of Joel 3
Through all of this, on a day when I buried a friend, I hold on to a promise.
But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion. (Joel 3:20-21)
Read that again with a fresh grave in mind. It does not say the individual lives are long. It says the people endure, and the One who dwells in Zion does not leave.
Life is fleeting. Seasons change. But our hope remains. We will continue standing in the gap, defending those we love, and believing that the Lord who dwells in Zion will protect His people.
